Platte Lake Trails As the picture was taken I could hear invisible ducks or geese making a racket on the other side of the lake somewhere. Platte Lake is fairly large, but even this distant disturbance was enough to send ripples propogating through my view. This is evident from the reflections of the stars of the Big Dipper: they become broad strokes with occasional dropouts as viewed in the lake surface. Faint distant aurora are recorded on the film. I could see only dim horizon glow, the moisture in the air becoming thicker at low angles. The film can see better than I can however: the pale green and reddish hues are characteristic of the northern lights. A small plane, probably from the distant skyglow of Brainerd passes through the view during this hour. It seems to be unsure of its heading, making course corrections along the way.
