Cartrails This shot was taken while I was setting up my telescope in a parking area off the road leading to Lake Louise. I set the camera on a tripod and left it open for about an hour. Although not exactly intended, there is much to see in this picture. The traffic turned out to be somewhat higher than I wanted, and the film caught numerous cars going by, including one that turned head-on into view. The headlights of the vehicles form the bright white stream; the running lights of tall trucks and buses made the orange trail above it. The camera is looking almost straight-on toward the celestial equator. The star trails are long, but the arcs are really only a 24th full circle. Notice that the upper trails arc upward and the lower arcs down, each defining a circle around the north or south pole. The brightest star is Altair, ten degrees above the equator. The stars exactly on the equator make a straight line along an enormous edge-on circle. Also note the faint vertical haze in the sky. This is the Milky Way, blurred across a one hour path.
