Winter Milky Way

Winter Legend

Winter Milky Way

In winter we no longer have a view of the center of the galaxy, instead we are looking away. Some distinctive constellations live here however: Perseus, Taurus and Orion, along with the brightest star in the sky, Sirius.

This view was taken in the vicinity of Flagstaff Arizona, a town with a lighting ordinance that allows only sodium vapor lights with their distinctive yellow color. The city is being considerate of the professional astronomers whose observatories are nearby. Their equipment can filter it out, but my film sees it all. Even here, 50 miles away, the thickness of the air near the horizon scatters the light to make the yellow backdrop.

Six pictures make this mosaic, each overlapped by the next except the last, which shows the silhouette of my guidescope in the corner of the frame.
