A horizon to horizon view. There is a wealth of detail in the original that is hard to see in this low res image. Click on the red rectangles in the legend to see these landmarks at half of full resolution (and at 5:1 compression unfortunately).

Autumn Milky Way Actually taken late on an August night, this is the view of the sky that is also seen in the evenings of late September. The site was the Athabasca river bed in Jasper Park Alberta Canada. Shadows of pine trees are seen at the near bank. The horizon to horizon view is actually extended somewhat since it took over an hour to complete the three pictures in this mosaic. As I made the exposures, more sky was being revealed to the east, and by the time I was done, the low nebulas M16 and M17 in the west had already set. Nice clear skies in a dark setting is a rare experience for me; I am always surprised at how light the sky is as it silhouettes the objects around me. |
